Airbnb – Diane’s Story

We have had the pleasure of working with Airbnb on their public policy team since 2015. In 2023 they contacted us about capturing stories of how Airbnb hosts in Nashville use their rental income. They wanted to showcase the benefit the rental income has to not only the homeowners, but also the city through economic growth, supporting businesses, and more. As the city has continued to grow and the standard of living has risen to astronomical levels, homeowners have found that being an Airbnb host has allowed them to stay in their homes through the additional income.

Diane started Hosting on Airbnb after moving into her husband’s childhood home in Enchanted Hills, a historically Black neighborhood. “Hosting on Airbnb has given my husband and I extra income in order to keep and restore our home to its original beauty,” says Diane.

This is one of four stories Airbnb had us tell for them, through an interview style short video.

THE PROCESS

Diane’s story goes against a lot of the common myths surrounding short term rentals. Sure, some Airbnb hosts use short term rentals to make themselves richer and really abuse the system, which can drive up affordable housing costs. But Diane’s story totally breaks that myth.

Diane lives in her husband‘s family‘s home and she uses a spare bedroom to keep up updates on her home, which always allows her to stay in her historically black middle class neighborhood. Narrowing her footage down to 60 seconds was one of the hardest parts – she was such a joy to sit down with and learn about her home and history.
